Unwelcome visitors

By unwelcome visitors, I'm not talking about friends who come to watch football and eat all the cake, I'm talking about the creepy crawly, multiple legged (most of the time) visitors. I knew when we moved to a tropical island that the wildlife would be different to what I was used to, but I didn't realise that so many different species would actually find their way inside our house.

Here are a few examples. Nothing too scary until you arrive at the teeny tiny snake. Granted, it's just a harmless grass snake, but what did it want from us, in our living room at 11.30pm!? I'd never seen a snake close up before, and it was a bit of a shock. Fortunately Merv managed to get it outside before telling me how terrified of them he is.

By far the most common sights, especially in the kitchen, are lizards and ants. They invade every kitchen, no matter how clean it may be. A single grain of rice is enough. People keep telling me that lizards are good, that they kill mosquitoes and I should be happy they're around. That's all very well until they poo all over the place, you find a dead one in a bag of flour, or a live one climbs into your cake tin and you don't notice when you put the lid on. I'm not sure who was more frightened the next day, him or me. He was so afraid that he ran away, leaving his tail behind. And before you ask, no, he didn't eat the cake, he just walked all over it with his little lizard feet.
